66kV CBD Security Project
December 20, 2017

One of Balpara’s biggest detailing projects to date. This project involved the installation of four 66kV circuits to three different Zone Substations around the CBD.

Project Scope

Our customer Daly’s sought our assistance to provide design & as-built detailing in support of their project to install four 66kV circuits linking three major Melbourne CBD zone substations:

  • Brunswick Terminal Substation (BTS)
  • Bouverie & Queensberry Zone Substation (BQ)
  • Waratah Zone Substation (W)

In total a length of 37,530 meter 1,600 mm2 1 core XLPE cable was required with 8 x 66kV joint bays.

Balpara’s Involvement

Engaged by Daly’s, Balpara assisted in:

  • Providing the best route for 66kV cabling to cable specification
  • The marking out of the joint bay locations in the CBD
  • Design of joint bays
  • Detailing the entire project for the full four year project duration to CitiPower Standards.

Project Delivery

It required Daly’s to work around the clock managing 24 hour shifts and concrete trucks to fill the excavation. A special backfilling material, FTB (Flowable Thermal Backfill), was required to be able to dissipate the heat and to allow the cable to perform optimally.

ISO9001 | Our Commitment to Quality

Balpara has held ISO9001 certification for over six years now without non-conformances and we successfully attained re-certification to the new AS/NZS 2016 standard. This being a reflection of our commitment to continuous improvement and quality.
